With 46 days left until the NHL trade deadline, on February 27th, 2012. Rumors have started to arise in Montreal, in regards to what player could be on the market.
As for the Montreal Canadiens, one player that has been rumored to be on the market is veteran defenseman, Hal Gill. Gill’s contract is up at the end of this season and General Manager Pierre Gauthier has not yet discussed a potential extension with the veteran defenseman. This is probably due to Pierre Gauthier have more important things to deal with, such as his currently 12 place Habs.
Several clubs who could be looking at acquiring the stay at home defenseman, would be the St. Louis Blues, Tampa Bay Lightning and the Philadelphia Flyers.
I doubt we will see another Tomas Kaberle acquisition in Montreal this year. With the position the Canadiens are currently in. Along with the fact that the Canadiens are right up against the salary cap and have players such as Andrei Kostitsyn, Travis Moen, Lars Eller, P.K. Subban and Carey Price to sign this off-season. I see the Canadiens being sellers and not buyers during this year’s NHL trade deadline.
Another player Pierre Gauthier could be putting on the market is Chris Campoli. Campoli is another player who is a UFA at the end of this season and is owned only $1.75 million this season. Campoli, at age 27, is a polished mobile defenseman, who possesses speed and adds value to the power play. Campoli’s contract and skill set is what makes him a candidate to be traded.
