Hearings Today for Michalek, Ovechkin Hits

According to NHL.com, hearings with the Department of Player Safety are scheduled today for both Penguins defenseman Zbynek Michalek and Washington’s Alex Ovechkin regarding each of their questionable hits that occurred during Sunday afternoon’s game at the CONSOL Energy Center between the Pittsburgh Penguins and the Washington Capitals.

Early in the second period (4:05), Michalek received a minor elbowing penalty for his hit on the Capitals’ centerman Matt Hendricks.  Ovechkin’s hit on Michalek a few minutes later was not assessed a penalty; however, it appeared that Ovechkin’s skates left the ice prior to hitting Michalek in the head.

Michalek’s hearing with Brendan Shanahan, NHL Senior Vice President of Player Safety, is scheduled for this morning while Ovechkin is scheduled to discuss his hit with Shanahan later in the afternoon.

Check back with me later today or tomorrow for results of these hearings.
