In just its second year, the fantasy draft for the All Star Game is becoming one of the highlights of the regular season.
The two captains, Zdeno Chara and Daniel Alfredsson, as well as their two alternate captains, Joffrey Lupul and Henrik Lundqvist, respectively, selected their rosters for the 2012 festivities, set to get underway in Ottawa this weekend.
With Jonathan Toews out and on injured reserve, the Blackhawks sent two representatives to Ottawa, with Marian Hossa and Patrick Kane attending the annual event.
For the most part, the draft went about as expected. Team Chara will have Tim Thomas between the pipes and does not have a representative from the Vancouver Canucks on their side.
What they do have, though, are two Blackhawks. Both Hossa and Kane were selected by Chara to join the side that has to be considered the favorite for this weekend’s game.
Hossa was selected in the fourth round, joining Chara, Lupul, Thomas, and Pavel Datsyuk and Evgeni Malkin. That’s incredible by itself. But all the way down in Round 12, Kane joined Team Chara as well.
Though Kane was surely sweating at lasting so long, he still didn’t get anywhere near the car that Logan Couture is taking home. Hossa and Kane join former teammate Brian Campbell on Team Chara, which should easily be considered the favorite. With the three of them, Thomas, Datsyuk, and Malkin, as well as Ryan Suter and Marian Gaborik, they look much stronger than a team featuring all of the Senators’ representatives, at least on paper.
The fact that Hossa, Chara, and Gaborik, all fellow countryman and friends, are on the same team is another intriguing storyline to drink in this weekend.
The 2012 NHL All Star game gets underway on Sunday, at 4 p.m. local time.
