Gagner's memorial 8 point night

By jayfriesen

What a special night it was at Rexall place tonight in Edmonton. Sam Gagner registered 4 goals and 8 points in an 8-4 win over the Chicago Blackhawks. Gagner’s 8 points ties an Oilers record set twice by Wayne Gretzky and once by Paul Coffey.Gagner become only the 11th player in NHL history to score 8 points in one game and the first to do it since Mario Lemieux did it in 1988.

Not to be lost in the moment Taylor hall and Jorden Eberle each had 4 point nights themselves.

The Blackhawks actually held a 2 goal lead early in the second period. The Blackhawks had the lone goal in the first period as James Mayers scored at the 6:29 mark and then Patrick Sharp put the Hawks up 2-0 40 seconds into the second period

And then the Sam Gagner show began. Gagner’s first point came on an assist to a goal by Taylor Hall around the 5 minute mark of the second period and he finished off the night with an assist on a goal by Jordan Eberle. “I think this is a joke, It definitely feels good. It felt like everything i touched went in” Gagner said after the game.

“I feel like a pigeon only getting 4 points” joked Taylor Hall comparing himself with Gagner’s performance tonight.

Meanwhile, Ryan Whitney got hist first goal in over a year as he scored the tying goal to make it 3-3. The goal was something Whitney really needed to get his confidence back up. After scoring Whitney gestured “pulling the monkey off his back”.

The Oilers went on to win the game 8-4 and for the first time that i can remember a player was named all 3 stars of the game. Sam Gagner
