Washington Capitals superstar defenseman Mike Green took part in an optional skate this morning in Tampa at the Tampa Times Forum. He was one of four players who took part of the optional practice. This marked the fifth straight day he’s been working out on the ice with his teammates but his status is still unclear.
Green underwent sports hernia surgery on January 17 and appears to be nearing a return to the Capitals lineup sometime soon. Could it be tonight? Possibly. It seems more likely that it will be sometime this week though. Green says he is starting to feel strong on the ice again and feels that he can be an effective unit again.
Coach Dale Hunter would only comment to say that Green is a game-time decision tonight against the Tampa Bay Lightning. I wouldn’t read too much into that statement thought. Although Green has expressed his optimism about his progress, it is extremely difficult to judge whether or not he is ready to jump back into the game.
Whenever Green does return to the lineup, look for the Capitals to ease him back into his normal workload. Expect the Capitals to roll with seven defensemen to get him back in the routine.
