Brian Burke Will Not Trade for a Goalie Before the Deadline

By Jeff Zeffer

With all the talk about the Toronto Maple Leafs and Brian Burke looking at acquiring that big, strong forward Toronto has needed ever since long time captain Mats Sundin left for the Vancouver Canucks. There has not been as much talk over the past couple weeks about the fact that the Maple Leafs are 28th in the league in goals against per game, with a 3.00 goals against average. Even though that stat is near par with the Maple Leafs Goal per game (2.97), a team’s GA/G needs to be much lower to have any success in the playoffs.

With that, Brian Burke is not looking at acquiring a goalie from now until the NHL trade deadline, but hopefully in the off-season.

“We are not looking for a goaltender at this point.” That could be because none are available at a decent price and Burke wisely thinks it’s better to wait until summer to plug this gaping chasm.

But which goalies could Brian Burke be looking at this off-season?

Some potentially available goalie could be Jhonas Enroth, Jonathan Bernier, Andres Lindback and Corey Schneider.

Out of this group of four I think Schneider is the most appealing and number one ready goalie.

Reasons why Schneider will be traded out of Vancouver; The Canucks are right up against the cap this season and with the potential of the salary cap lowering. Plus the Canucks just have a few UFA/RFA’s this season such as Sami Salo and Mason Raymond, which does not give the Canucks that much wiggle room come July 1st. There is basically not that much room when Schneider becomes an RFA after this season.

Reasons why Schneider will not be traded out of Vancouver; Schneider gives a security blanket to the Canucks in case Roberto Luongo starts to falter in the playoffs.

Ryan Miller name also comes to mind because he has been in trade rumours all month. Though acquiring Miller would be like trying to acquire Rick Nash.
