Washington Capitals head coach Dale Hunter made it clear today that Alex Ovechkin is questionable for tonight’s game against the Ottawa Senators. He told reporters this morning that Ovechkin is suffering from a lower-body injury.
Ovechkin appeared to injure either his knee or foot with about seven minutes left in the second period in Monday night’s loss to the Carolina Hurricanes. He left the bench and headed to the locker room for the remainder of the period, and only returned to play five minutes and change in the third period. He was given a “maintenance day” yesterday, and skated for only about eight minutes in this morning’s practice.
With no certainty that Ovechkin will be in the lineup tonight, the Capitals have recalled Keith Aucoin from the AHL Hershey Bears.
Ovechkin has not missed a game this season due to injury, and has only missed three due to a three-game suspension, but he has struggled of late. He recorded only one shot and a minus-2 rating in Monday’s 5-0 loss to Carolina and has been help without a point in three of the last four games, and five of the last nine since returning from his suspension.
Ovechkin leads the Capitals in goals (24) and points (45), but is on pace for a career-low 62 points.
In Ovechkin’s career against Ottawa, he has recorded 34 points in 26 games and has eight multiple-point games against them.
