Washington Capitals captain and superstar Alex Ovechkin was named the third star of the week for the week ending on March 25 today, according to a team source.

Ovechkin led the league with six goals and an assist during the week. The week saw the Capitals gain six out of a possible eight points in four games. The Russian Machine had two goals in a 5-3 win over the Detroit Red Wings on March 19, the only goal in a 2-1 shootout loss to the Philadelphia Flyers on March 22, two more goals in a 4-3 overtime loss to the Winnipeg Jets on March 23, and added his sixth in the Capitals’ 3-0 win over the Minnesota Wild on Sunday night. He is now tied for fourth in the NHL with Phil Kessel in goals with 36 in 72 games.

Ovechkin has ten goals in the month of March, and nine in his last nine games. He has scored in five consecutive games, dating back to March 18 (7 goals), a game the Capitals lost 5-2 against the Chicago Blackhawks.

Ovechkin has 61 points on the season (36 G, 25 A), the most on the Capitals roster. Alexander Semin ranks second on the roster with 48 points (18 G, 30 A).

Washington currently holds onto the eighth playoff spot in the Eastern Conference with 84 points. The Capitals are in a virtual tie with the Buffalo Sabres, but hold the tie-breaker due to their regulation and overtime wins. The teams will face off for sole possession of eighth place on Tuesday night in the nation’s capital.

Buffalo’s Ryan Miller was named the second star of the week, and Pittsburgh Penguins Evgeni Malkin was awarded the first star of the week.
