Ottawa Senators Ben Bishop out two weeks with groin injury

By Matthew Kirkpatrick

The Ottawa Senators will have to do without rookie goaltender Ben Bishop for the next two weeks.

According to reports coming out of St Louis, Bishop injured his groin midway through the second period of the Senators Saturday night tilt versus the Pittsburgh Penguins and had to leave the game. Craig Anderson came in to relieve Bishop and the Senators went on to win the game by the score of 8-4.

Alex Auld will dress for tonight’s game against the Winnipeg Jets, but lets not kid ourselves, the Senators will ride Anderson for the remainder of the season barring injury, or severe ineptness.

It would seem likely that Ottawa would call up Robin Lehner from Binghamton if Anderson stumbles even slightly.

Auld has not inspired the Senators coaching staff with much confidence going 2-4-2 with a 3.35 goals against average and an .884 save percentage in eight starts this season, and the Senators margin for error is very slim, with Ottawa sitting in seventh place in the East with just a two point lead on the Buffalo Sabres and the Washington Capitals. Auld is only there to keep the bench warm and guard the water bottles. He will only see the ice if there is an medical emergency.

Lehner hasn’t had a great season in the AHL either, posting an 11-19-1 record while down on the farm, but he has risen to the occasion every time Ottawa has called him up, and seems very comfortable in an NHL net. Lehner’s NHL numbers have been far better with the young Swede posting a 3-2-1 record with a 2.01 goals against average, and a .935 save percentage.

Luckily for Ottawa, for what seems like the first time in franchise history, they have depth at the goaltending position.
