Blues Face Good Test Tonight, Plus President's Trophy Isn't Always A Good Thing

By Tony Moreno

The St. Louis Blues will be looking to rebound after a tough loss to the Columbus Blue Jackets last Saturday.  The Blues were given a rare loss at home in a game where Jaroslav Halak appeared not great.  The Blue Jackets made it clear that they are going out this season with something to prove.  With all of these players becoming healthy, the Blues may need a couple games to get in synch with one another.

Brian Elliot is looking to continue his hot streak tonight against the tough Detroit Red Wings.  Detroit leads the season series 3-2, but the Blues have taken the previous 2 games.  The Blues will have a good test tonight against a good western conference team and will hope to create momentum going in the playoffs.  The Blues have hit a little bit of a rough patch 4-3-3 in their last 10 games.  Elliot needs help from the offense and the Blues will be looking to put up goals against a tough Red Wings defense and goalie.

The Blues were in a great spot to win the President’s Trophy, but now sit 3 points behind the Vancouver Canucks and the New York Rangers with 3 games left.  It would be a great accomplishment to have grabbed the top spot in the league with home ice throughout the playoffs, but the team who has won the President’s trophy hasn’t always had the best luck.  Since the 85-86 season, out of the 25 President Trophy winners, only 7 have won the Stanley Cup making a success rate of 28%.  The Red Wings have won both the President’s Trophy and the Stanley Cup in the same season twice in the last 10 years, and are also the only team to reach that achievement in the last 10 years as well.  With NHL teams becoming much more competitive, I would expect that winning the President’s Trophy may become less and less of a deal.  Instead, this can place an enormous target on the teams back which creates an upset.  In 08-09 the San Jose Sharks won the President’s Trophy but lost in the first round.  The following year in 09-10, the Washington Capitals led the league at the end of the season, but lost in the first round to the Montreal Canadiens.  The Vancouver Canucks were almost upset last year when they barely came out with a victory last year against the Chicago Blackhawks in the first round in game 7.  They ended up losing in the Stanley Cup Finals.  We all know the only trophy that matters at the end of the season is the Stanley Cup.
