Today in Boston Bruins History: April 5

1958: Don McKenney sets a Boston Bruins record for assists in a playoff game when he has five during an 8-2 win over the New York Rangers.

1969: Gerry Cheevers came into this game with a shutout streak that extended all the way to 128:23 before Ron Ellis of the Toronto Maple Leafs breaks it by scoring. The Bruins, though, eventually win 4-3.

1972: The Bruins shut out the Maple Leafs 5-0 on the strength of  Cheevers’ 27 saves in the playoff quarterfinals.

1983: The Bruins beat the Quebec Nordiques 4-3 in overtime during their division semifinal playoff series. Better yet, the Bruins climbed out of a 0-3 hole to do so.

1991: In a playoff game against the Hartford Whalers, Cam Neely scores a hat trick as great part of a 4-3 victory.

2003: Joe Thornton gets his 100th and 101st assists of the season as the Bruins win 8-5 over the Buffalo Sabres. He’s the first Bruin to do that since 1993-94.

A year ago today: The Bruins get in some practice before their next game, one of the last of the regular season.
