HAPPY BIRTHDAY to former Penguin player
(he turns 42 today)
The Penguins claimed Leroux in the NHL Waiver Draft in January 1995. They eventually signed him to a two-way contract in July 2002 after which he played for Pittsburgh’s AHL affiliate, the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Baby Pens, with whom he played a total of 57 games before being traded (along with Jan Hrdina) to the Phoenix Coyotes in March 2003. Leroux would only play six games with the Coyotes AHL affiliate in Springfield before announcing his NHL retirement on September 6, 2003.
Leroux continued to have ties with the Pittsburgh Penguins after coming out of retirement in February 2006 and playing with the St. Jean Chiefs of the Ligue Nord-Américaine de Hockey (LNAH). He would eventually sign with the ECHL’s Wheeling Nailers in November 2007 (the Nailers are the ECHL affiliate of the Pittsburgh Penguins).
- Wayne Gretzky played in his 1,487th, and final, regular season NHL game against the Pittsburgh Penguins; the Penguins won the game in overtime, 2-1, on a goal scored by Jaromir Jagr (Gretzky assisted on the New York Rangers‘ only goal to bring the NHL leading scorer’s career point total to 2857 (894G + 1963A))
- the Penguins beat the New Jersey Devils, 6-3, in the opening game of the Patrick Division Semifinals (the Penguins eventually won the series in five games)
