Brian Burke, President and General Manager of the Toronto Maple Leafs will be looking an edge in whatever aspect of the game of hockey this off season. Well Burke has hired on former 1984 champion figure skater Barb Underhill, as the organization’s skating consultant.
This means Burke has parted ways with Graeme Townshend, now former skating coach, who was originally hired by former Maple Leafs Head Coach Ron Wilson.
Now I am sure that there are some people who need to think twice when they hear that a former figure skater, is the skating consultant for the team in the capital city of hockey. But Barb was worked quite intensively with hockey players on the amateur level, with the Guelph Storm of the OHL since 2007. Though the NHL level will be nothing new for Barb Underhill as she has also has done previous work with teams like the New York Rangers, Tampa Bay Lightning and the Anaheim Ducks.
Barb Underhill is not the only female figure skater to work with hockey player, Karen Magnussen another former figure skating champion has taught skating for years at North Shore Winter Club in Vancouver, British Columbia.
All in all it is certainly an interesting move by Brian Burke to bring on such an established athlete in her day, who has build up quite the resume over time.
All I hope is that Barb’s winning mentality on the international level will be infectious to the players who will where the blue and white in Toronto come this fall.
