Prior to getting to play against the Sabres (#5 seed) in the Conference Semifinals, the Penguins (#6 seed) beat the Washington Capitals (#3 seed) in six games, 4-2. Pittsburgh moved on to the Eastern Conference Finals against the New Jersey Devils (#1 seed), after taking the series against Buffalo in seven games, who ultimately stopped the Penguins from continuing to the Stanley Cup Final in five games.
- Roger Marino officially joined the ownership group of the Penguins
- the Penguins fired head coach Johnny Wilson (finishing with a record of 240-91-105-44 and a .471 winning percentage)
Wilson coached the Penguins for three seasons (1977-1980) leading them to two playoff appearances in that time. He retired from coaching in 1981 after one additional season with the AHL’s Springfield Kings. He was the brother of former NHL player and coach Larry Wilson, and uncle of former NHL player and coach Ron Wilson.
