- Jaromir Jagr beat New York Rangers John Vanbiesbrouck on Pittsburgh’s first playoff penalty shot in team history
- the Penguins captured their first ever Prince of Wales Conference Championship by defeating the Boston Bruins in six games and earned the right to play in their first Stanley Cup Finals
