HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO FORMER PENGUIN
(he turns 40 today)
- the Pittsburgh Penguins overpowered the Washington Capitals to win Game 7, 6-2, to end the series and return to the Eastern Conference Final for the second consecutive year
- the Civic Arena’s address at 300 Auditorium Place was renamed 66 Mario Lemieux Place
- Penguins Shawn McEachern was stopped on a penalty shot by New York Rangers‘ John Vanbiesbrouck, but the Pens defeated the Rangers in six games to capture the Patrick Division playoff title
The Penguins went into these playoffs as the defending Stanley Cup Champions and #3 seed in the conference. Prior to playing the Rangers, Pittsburgh beat the Capitals in the semifinals in seven games and then, after New York, moved on to play the Boston Bruins in the conference final. They ultimately repeated to become the Stanley Cup Champions for the second season in a row sweeping the Chicago Blackhawks in the Stanley Cup Final.
