Gary Roberts was one of the more revered veteran players of the Pittsburgh Penguins by Pens nation. He was well-known for being very disciplined both on and off the ice.
In February 2007, the Florida Panthers traded Roberts to Pittsburgh for defenseman Noah Welch. He resigned with the Penguins for a one-year contract worth $2.5 million, but they traded his exclusive negotiation rights along with Ryan Malone to the Tampa Bay Lightning on June 28, 2008 in exchange for a 2009 third-round draft pick.
- Evgeni Malkin‘s two goals and one assist established a Pittsburgh Penguins record of six consecutive multiple-point playoff games
- Penguins defeated the Boston Bruins in four games to win the Wales Conference Championship for the second consecutive season
- the Penguins defeated the Minnesota North Stars, 6-4, in Game 5 of the Stanley Cup finals
