- Pittsburgh Penguins Petr Sykora scored with 10:03 left into the third overtime to push the Penguins past the Detroit Red Wings to stave-off elimination in Game 5 of the final (Detroit lead the series, three games to two); game started on June 2
The Penguins went into the 2008 Stanley Cup playoffs as the number 2 seed in the Eastern Conference while the Red Wings were the number 1 seed in the Western Conference. Pittsburgh won against the Ottawa Senators (sweeping the Sens 4-0), New York Rangers (4-1), and the Philadelphia Flyers for a chance at the Stanley Cup against Detroit (a series which they ultimately lost with Detroit taking four games to Penguins two).
