- Detroit Red Wings goalie Chris Osgood stopped all 22 Pittsburgh Penguins shots in Game 5 of the Stanley Cup Final and defeated the Pens by a score of 5-0 to take a 3-2 lead in the series
This game would be the last that Detroit would win in the series as the Penguins went on to win over the Red Wings four games to three and become the 2009 Stanley Cup Champions.

- Pittsburgh obtained Ron Schock and Craig Cameron from the St. Louis Blues for Lou Angotti and a first round choice in the 1971 Amateur Draft

- Jack Riley starts as Pens general manager as the NHL expansion draft took place in Montreal
- Pittsburgh obtained Paul Andrea, Dunc McCallum and George Konik from the New York Rangers for Larry Jeffrey
