- Max Talbot scored twice for the Pittsburgh Penguins as the Pens defeated the Detroit Red Wings, 2-1, in Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Final; it was the 15th time in league history that the Final reached Game 7 (and it marked the latest date in the season the Penguins have ever played)
- Penguins center Evgeni Malkin was named to the NHL‘s first All-Star team; it is the first time the honor had been bestowed upon Malkin, who finished the 2007-08 regular season second in the NHL with 106 points
- Pens introduced the new logo and introduced “Iceburgh” as the team mascot
- Bob Johnson was hired as the head coach and Scott Bowman is named as Director of Development and Recruitment
