NHL Rumors: Zach Parise’s Rights traded to Colorado Avalanche

By Derek Kessinger

Zach Parise, the prize of the upcoming NHL free agency period, has agreed to a trade to the Colorado Avalanche. This rumor is coming from Eurolanche.com, which has been known to break big rumors in the past on the Avalanche. Zach Parise just finished up playing for the Eastern Conference Champion New Jersey Devils last week after they lost to the Los Angeles Kings.

The Devils, who still do not have an owner and may be taken over by the NHL, are not stable enough to offer the long-term deal Parise is likely to get on the open market. The Devils made themselves famous for cap space mismanagement last year, not being able to suit up 20 players because they were over the spending limit. Apparently, the Devils tried to trade Parise’s rights to the Dallas Stars, but he vetoed that trade.

The trade as it’s being reported would send goalie J.S. Giguere and forward Chuck Kobasew to New Jersey for Parise and goalie Johan Hedberg. Parise is good friends with Erik Johnson and Paul Stastny, as all of them have come up in the American hockey system. Stastny and Parise were phenomenal together during the 2010 silver medal campaign for the United States in Vancouver.

While Zach Parise is the ultimate prize, the Avalanche have the cap space to make other moves as the summer continues. The Avalanche have a young core featuring defensemen Erik Johnson, goalie Semyon Varlamov and forwards Matt Duchene, Ryan O’Reilly, Gabriel Landeskog and David Jones to build on. With the addition of Parise, they’re a threat in the west.
