The off-season has just started for the Toronto Maple Leafs and already President and General Manager Brian Burke has made two trades and drafted some well-rounded hockey prospects.
But as for the Maple Leafs own current players to potential be re-sign this summer, one of them is Nikolai Kulemin.
“I have a plan for Nikolai Kulemin,” Gary Greenstin, Kulemin’s agent, told The Hockey Writers via email on Monday evening. ”I mentioned that Nikolai Kulemin loves the city and the organization. He would like to remain in Toronto. He has a great chemistry with Mikhail Grabovski and Clarke McArthur.” But in the end “They have to do what is best for the team and I have to do the best for my client.”
Right now I feel that it is just as possible for Kulemin to re-sign with the Maple Leafs as it is for Brian Burke to trade him. As I think we all know Burke is always eying a few players in the NHL that he absolutely covets. With Kulemin age and his seldom success in the NHL, he is certainly still a commodity for the Maple Leafs, a commodity I think could easily be moved in the right package for the Maple Leafs.
Kulemin joined the Maple Leafs drafted him in the second round (44th overall) of the 2006 NHL Draft. Kulemin later played his rookie season in 2008/09 and recorded 15 goals. After that, Kulemin’s totals improved each season up until 2011/12. In 303 career regular season games, Kulemin has scored 68 goals and has 84 assists.
