Jonathan Bernier to be Traded, Toronto Maple Leafs the Destination

By Jeff Zeffer

With a thin free agent market, I will be taking another look at a trade scenario that could certainly improve the Toronto Maple Leafs team dramatically. The trade scenario that I am looking at is the fact that Jonathan Bernier wants out of Los Angeles and the Kings need to get rid of Bernier. Jonathan Bernier is a goalie with his own promising future, but since he has been stuck behind a young goalie in Jonathan Quick who is on his way to stardom. With Quick’s brand new contact on the horizon of been finalized. Bernier now has a potential chance if he is traded to the right team, for an opportunity to be a star goalie.

So what better place for Jonathan Bernier to go than to the Toronto Maple Leafs and who better to acquire him then President and General Manager Brian Burke.

Who should Brian Burke be giving up to acquire such a player?

I see another hockey trade, value for value here, so unfortunately it could be a Carl Gunnarsson who could get sent back to Los Angeles. If not than possibly a Cody Franson and a prospect; all I’m seeing is the Kings need for a young defender and not a forward.

After acquiring Bernier, Bernier has one more year left on his contact at $1.25 million and then becomes a RFA after next season.

Bernier last season finished with a 5-6-2 record, a .909 save percentage and 2.36 goals against average.

As for the Los Angeles Kings and their free agency quest this summer, it will be interesting if the Kings do pick up another goalie, since obviously that would call for a Jonathan Bernier exit.
