The New York Rangers and gree agency

By garymarchese

The New York Rangers had  a great regular season and they made a good run in the postseason.  They were a little disappointed with losing to the New Jersey Devils in the Eastern Conference Finals but what can you do.  The Devils deserved to win in a hard fought series.  The Rangers didn’t play their best in that series but they are a  young team that will come back strong.  Here is a look at what has been going on so far with them in the off-season and what may be to come.

The Rangers resigned backup goalie Marty Biron.  The Rangers signed forward Taylor Pyatt on Tuesday evening.  Pyatt has played the last three seasons with the Phoenix Coyotes.  He appeared in 73 games last season and scored nine goals and had 19 points.  He scored four goals in the playoffs and had six points in 16 games as the Coyotes went to the Western Conference finals.  He is 6-4 and 228 pounds and plays a rugged two way game.  He fit’s the Rangers well.  The Rangers also resigned Kris Newbury on Tuesday.  Newbury mostly played with the Connecticut Whale of the AHL.  He has appeared in 19 games with the Rangers. Stu Bickel also resigned with the Rangers.

The Rangers agreed to terms with two players on Sunday which was the first day of free agency.  Arron Asham who came over from the Pittsburgh Penguins and Michael Haley came over from the New York Islanders.  Asham has played with all the teams in the Atlantic division and is a tough guy.  He scored five goals last year and had 16 points and also amassed 76 penalty minutes.  Haley is considered one of the tougher guys in the league.  He racked up 151 penalty minutes in 43 games with the Islanders over the last three seasons.

The Rangers will still try and add a goal scorer as that is where they are lacking.  They will be without Marion Gaborik to start the season which will hurt their offense even more.  The Rangers look to make another run at Rick Nash who they thought about at the trade deadline last season.  He has played his whole career with the Columbus Blue Jackets and is their captain.  If the Rangers could add him without giving up too much they will get a formidable scorer which will help them greatly.
