- the Pittsburgh Penguins signed defenseman Brooks Orpik to a six-year, $22.5 million contract that began with the 2009-10 season
- the Pittsburgh Penguins also signed center Evgeni Malkin to a multi-year contract extension worth $8.7 million a year over five years also starting with the 2009-10 season
- Leonard “Red” Kelly was named as the second Penguins head coach
Prior to coaching, Kelly played over 12 seasons with the Detroit Red Wings. During that time he helped the club win eight regular-season championships, four Stanley Cups, and was named to the First Team All-Star six times. He was eventually traded to the Toronto Maples Leafs for whom he played with for eight seasons and also helped to win four Stanley Cups. Over his career, Kelley played a total of 1,316 regular-season games and had a total of 823 points (281 G, 542 A).
Kelly coached the Pittsburgh Penguins for three seasons taking them to the playoffs for both the first and last seasons of coaching. He then went on to coach the Maple Leafs in 1973 through the 1976-77 season after which he was fired having 30 years in the NHL.
