Bergevin was drafted in the third round of the 1983 NHL Entry Draft by the Chicago Blackhawks (59th overall). Beginning in 1984, he played a total of five seasons with the Blackhawks before heading to the New York Islanders where he played for the AHL affiliate, the Springfield Indians.
Currently, Bergevin is the general manager and the executive vice president of the Montreal Canadiens which is a position he was hired to do back in May 2012. He is responsible for hiring former Pittsburgh Penguins head coach, Michel Therrien, as the Canadiens new head coach.
