While other teams making a big splash in free agency, the only moves the St. Louis Blues have made were signing Ty Rattie and Vladimir Tarasenko to entry level contracts, as well as resigning TJ Oshie and David Perron. With not many free agents remaining, the Blues best move may come down to making a trade. What do the Blues need though? With a log jam at the forward position, the Blues have 6 defenseman signed and would love to add another top 4 defenseman. Doug Armstrong has made it known that he is willing to trade away draft picks, but with an abundance of offensive players, he could throw one or two in a deal. Matt D’Agostini is someone who can be used to be added onto a deal and possibly Chris Stewart depending if he can find his groove.
Keith Yandle of the Phoenix Coyotes has been rumored to be on the trade market for quite some time now. While many teams would love to add him to their roster, the Blues have the offense that could make a deal work. The asking price may be high, but if Armstrong is willing to give away the 1st round pick plus a forward of some skill, then the Blues have a very possible chance of obtaining him. Yandle would instantly make the defense better, but could also help young players like Kevin Shattenkirk, Alex Pietrangelo, and Ian Cole develop better.
Jay Bouwmeester has also been mentioned in trade talks but the Calgary Flames has not demanded any list of teams or mentioned anything about wanting to move. His offensive game has been his strong suit, but lately he has not been playing up to his $6.6 mil cap hit. However, on a team with Ken Hitchcock’s system and being partnered with Alex Pietrangelo can certainly help his game. Bouwmeester may be a more unlikely option, but with many assets and cap space available, he is still possible.
While a trade is possible, don’t forget about the free agents still available. Carlo Colaiacovo played well with Pietrangelo last year in the playoffs, but he has a history of injuries and the Blues would much rather upgrade. Michal Rozsival is also an option if the Blues are looking for a solid defender. Jaroslav Spacek could be a low risk/high reward with the Blues.
The Blues have many options available, and with new ownership and a bit more money to spend, they have the ability to make a move. However, with a similar roster to last season, the Blues are confident in their team at making another successful run in the regular season and hopefully earning a better result in the post season.
