On October 13, 2011, the Phoenix Coyotes earned their first victory of the 2011-2012 season on the road against the Nashville Predators. The game against Nashville would be the third consecutive road game the Coyotes had played to open the season. The Coyotes entered the night winless, sporting a 0-1-1 record. Coyotes goaltender Jason LaBarbera would make his first start of the season on this night.
The first period was dominated by the Coyotes. David Schlemko, Ray Whitney and Lauri Korpikoski would all score their first goals of the season (just under seven minutes apart) in period one to give the Coyotes a 3-0 lead at the first intermission. Six different Coyotes assisted on the three goals.
Mikkel Boedker would add a goal at 11:26 of the second period to make the score 4-0 in favor of the Coyotes. Nashville would score the next two goals, a short-handed goal in the second period and an even-strength goal in the third period, to cut the Coyotes lead in half. Shane Doan would add an empty net goal with 1:10 remaining in the game to seal the victory for the Coyotes.
By the end of the game, 13 different Coyotes players had a point and five different Coyotes players had a goal. Doan was the only Coyote to score multiple points (1-1-2). LaBarbera stopped 23 of 25 shots for a save percentage of .920. The Coyotes did not have an even-strength goal coming into the night but scored all five of their goals against Nashville at even-strength.
