Joe Vitale is an American-born player who grew up in St. Louis, Missouri.
He started his hockey career in high school for Christian Brothers College High School where he helped earn the team three state championships, two undefeated seasons, and a national title. He also played for the St. Louis Jr. Blues (Central States Hockey League, CSHL) and Sioux Falls Stampede (United States Hockey League, USHL).
Prior to attending college, Vitale was drafted in the seventh round (195th overall) of the 2005 NHL Entry Draft by the Pittsburgh Penguins. He then began his freshman year at Northeastern University (2005-06) where he played for four seasons (2005-06 – 2008-09) along with current Wilkes-Barre Scranton goalie, Brad Thiessen.
In April 2009, he signed a one-year entry-level contract with Pittsburgh through the 2009-10 season. He then signed a two-year extension in January 2010 and made his NHL debut with the Penguins on February 10, 2011 against the Los Angeles Kings. Vitale scored his
