The self-proclaimed “Worldwide Leader in Sports” released its Uni Watch Power Rankings for 2012 a few days ago, which includes a ranking and quick blurb for each of the 122 teams across the four major American sports – NHL, NFL, MLB and NBA. pittsburgh penguins jerseys
Here’s how the NHL teams stacked up:
12. Buffalo Sabres
14. San Jose Sharks
15. Florida Panthers
16. Winnipeg Jets
18. Phoenix Coyotes
19. Calgary Flames
23. Anaheim Ducks
24. Ottawa Senators
25. St. Louis Blues
26. Edmonton Oilers
29. Dallas Stars
ESPN ranked the Penguins’ uniform set the seventh-best in the National Hockey League, with this to say about them:
How can you resist a skating penguin? That’s a trick question — everyone knows there’s no way to resist a skating penguin, because a skating penguin is literally irresistible! Once you have that kind of karma going for you, the rest of the uniform falls into place pretty easily.
Most of the list is a joke – though isn’t everything that ESPN tries to tell us about hockey? – but the biggest crime must be ranking Minnesota’s Christmas elf uniforms inside the Top 25, let alone the Top 10. Philadelphia’s Halloween uniforms are also relatively embarrassing, but I feel sorry enough for sports fans in that city I’ll give them a break here.
Another notable team up there is the Predators at number 22. Their white uniforms are simply outstanding – arguably my favorite in the entire league. On the flip side, their mustard yellows are an eyesore and I couldn’t put up with 41+ games of them each season. I’m not quite sure where I’d rank the team’s uniforms overall because of the difference.
Montreal is a respectable choice for the top spot. They’re about as classic – think New York Yankees – as the NHL has to offer. Nothing over the top, but not as plain and bland as many “classic” uniforms.
The Penguins’ uniforms were rated the 26th of 122 in ESPN’s cross-sport rankings.
