Who Is New York Islanders First-Round Pick Griffin Reinhart?
The New York Islanders were in a familiar position at the 2012 NHL draft. After another disappointing season in 2011-12, the New York Islanders found themselves with the fourth overall pick. The Islanders selected left-handed defenseman Griffin Reinhart, a burly 18-year-old kid from Vancouver. Griffin Reinhart was the second defenseman chosen in the draft, two picks after Ryan Murray was selected by the Columbus Blue Jackets.
The New York Islanders selected a defensive prospect with endless potential in Griffin Reinhart. His 6’4”, 210-pound frame at just 18 years old means Reinhart could be NHL ready soon. Reinhart also has plenty of room to fill out, and could add some bulk quickly. He has an NHL pedigree with his father, Paul Reinhart, playing nearly 650 games in the NHL. Both of his brothers are also skilled hockey players. With an NHL body and a history of hockey running through his family, the 18-year-old defenseman could make an immediate impact on the New York Islanders.
Griffin Reinhart is a decorated youth hockey player with a long history of productivity and winning. Perhaps most promising of all is that Reinhart is coming off a breakout season in the WHL with the Edmonton Oil Kings. In 58 games, Reinhart collected 12 goals and 36 points last season.
The New York Islanders have struggled to build a winning team in the Atlantic Division. Under the shadow of four 100-point teams last season, the Islanders again finished last in the division. However, recent drafts have produced NHL-caliber talent like Jonathan Tavares and Kyle Okposo. With a strong, young group of players developing for the Islanders, competitive seasons may not be far away. Griffin Reinhart could make an impact very quickly on a team desperate to solidify their defensive corps. Reinhart should prove to be another excellent draft pick by the New York Islanders.
