  • Pittsburgh Mayor Joseph M. Barr and Pittsburgh Hornets owner John Harris were on hand for the Ice Capades show at the Civic Arena grand opening

1949

  • Pittsburgh Hornets goaltender and future Pittsburgh Penguins general manager Baz Bastien suffered a career-ending injury when he lost an eye during training camp at Welland, Ontario and wore a glass eye for the rest of his life

Bastien was first associated with the Pittsburgh Hornets as the goaltender and later became the Hornets head coach and general manager. In 1976 he was named the Pittsburgh Penguins general manager, replacing Wren Blair, until his death in a car crash in 1983; Bastien was replaced by Eddie Johnston.
