- the Pittsburgh Penguins raised it’s third Stanley Cup Championship banner to the top of Mellon Arena’s rafters
The Penguins played the New York Rangers that night. It also marked the final home-opener and the final season for Pittsburgh at the Mellon Arena as the next season they would play in their new home across the street at the CONSOL Energy Center (CEC).
The evening was topped off with a fight between Rangers heavyweight Donald Brashear and Penguins enforcer Eric Godard. Godard was the clear winner of the bought.
Penguins pulled out a win over the Blueshirts by a score of 3-2 making it a memorable night for both the organization and it’s fans at the last home-opener at the Igloo.
