Today in Boston Bruins History: October 9

Boston Bruins history for October 9:

1954: The 1954-55 season kicks off with the first half of a home-and-home, a visit to Montreal to see the Montreal Canadiens. It ends in a 4-1 Bruins loss.

1958: Just like four years prior, the Bruins start their season by visiting Montreal. Once again, they come away defeated, this time 3-2.

1960: This time, the Bruins are in their third game of the season and are finishing up a home-and-home by taking on the Habs in Boston. This time, it ends in a 4-4 tie, their second consecutive tie of the season so far.

1975: The 1975-76 season begins with a Bruins 9-4 loss to none other than the Canadiens.

1976: The Bruins travel to Toronto for their first road game of the 1976-77 season, but it doesn’t go well as they lose 7-5 to the Maple Leafs.

1980: The 1980-81 season starts off strong as the Bruins beat the New York Rangers by a 7-2 score.

1982: The Bruins make the relatively short trip to Hartford to take on the Whalers and beat them 5-4.

1983: Another victory for the Bruins over the Whalers, though this time at Boston Garden and by a 4-1 score.

1986: The Bruins get burned by the Calgary Flames in a 5-3 loss to start the season.

1988: Once again the Whalers are on the schedule as the Bruins finish off a home-and-home with a 3-1 win to go with the 6-2 win just the night before.

1989: The Bruins shut out the Habs 2-0 for their first shutout of the season.

1991: The Sabres and the Bruins play to a 4-4 tie in Buffalo.

1993: In a game against the Quebec Nordiques, the Bruins put together a 7-3 win.

1995: This time against Buffalo, the Bruins beat the Sabres 5-3.

1999: In only the second home game of the 1999-2000 season, the Bruins tie with the Philadelphia Flyers by a 1-1 score.

2000: Just before embarking on a West Coast swing, the Bruins beat the Florida Panthers 4-2 at home.

2008: The Bruins start 2008-09 away from TD Garden, beating the Colorado Avalanche 5-4. Goal-scorers for the Bruins are Phil Kessel, Blake Wheeler, Marc Savard, Michael Ryder and David Krejci. This is Patrice Bergeron‘s first game back after missing all but 10 games in the 2007-08 season due to a severe concussion. He has an assist. Wheeler scores his first NHL goal.

2010: The Bruins open their season in the Czech Republic against the Phoenix Coyotes as part of the NHL Premiere series. They lose 5-2, though Nathan Horton scores both at even strength and on the power play to break a shutout bid that looked guaranteed when the Coyotes were up 4-0 at the end of the second.
