While the NHL and the NHLPA continue to discuss a new CBA, many players are performing in front of crowds overseas. Philadelphia Flyers‘ forward Claude Giroux is coming off of his best season of his career and one of the best individual playoff performances for a Flyers’ forward since Eric Lindros. Well, Giroux has picked up where he last left off and is continuing to play at a very high level.
Giroux along with his Flyers’ teammate Daniel Briere are playing in Germany with Eisbären Berlin. So far through eight games with Eisbären, Giroux has recorded a nineteen points. Of those points, four of them are goals and fifteen are assists. Having Giroux on your team’s roster really helps because he opens up lanes on the ice for other players to shoot the puck, which most of the time leads to the pucks finding twine. It is imperative for Giroux to continue to play at this high level. If he can continue to do this, then Giroux could be given the title as the ‘best player in the NHL’ and the Flyers could be likely favorites to win the Stanley Cup.
Giroux is entering the final years of his contract extension with the Flyers. With the CBA negotiations not likely to be agreed upon soon, Giroux could find himself playing in the last year of his contract without any NHL competition for almost a year. Remember to keep this in mind, if the new CBA is resolved and there are new rules regarding contracts and extensions, then Flyers’ General Manager Paul Holmgren could possibly extend Giroux during the season. Look for Giroux to continue to contribute at such a dominant level with Eisbären.
