Henrik Lundqvist may not have been able to best Martin Brodeur of the New Jersey Devils this postseason, but the New York Rangers goalie picked up the win in a charity exhibition for Hurricane Sandy relief this weekend.  In a meaningless game for a great cause, Lundqvist’s appearance was extremely meaningful.  The faceoff between the rival goalies helped drive sales for the relief effort, and the effort Lundqvist made in order to attend the game and help his community was truly astounding.

The Rangers’ goalie returned from Sweden to play in the charity game in Atlantic City, New Jersey.  The game was an incredible success, selling nearly 11,000 tickets with extra revenues generated by the players auctioning away their game-worn jerseys to benefit victims of Hurricane Sandy.

While the game was mostly comprised of local players not currently playing abroad and ineligible for the AHL, Henrik Lundqvist went out of his way to attend the charity game.  His presence represented the benevolent spirit of the game, as NHL players from rival teams came together to support local victims of the most devastating storm in the history of New Jersey. The New Jersey shoreline was crushed by Hurricane Sandy, but the efforts of NHL players will help rebuild broken communities and lost homes.

While it was great to see hockey again in the face of the latest NHL lockout negotiation failures, the key to this weekend’s charity hockey game was helping the victims of Hurricane Sandy. While it was a wonderful gesture by players from rival teams to come together for a great cause, Lundqvist’s impressive effort to return from abroad just for the game in order to support local victims is truly amazing.
