Anaheim Ducks fans aren’t used to seeing their star players make international headlines besides Luca Sbisa and Jonas Hiller. Now as the lockout is about 75 days old, they find Bobby Ryan’s name popping up in Sweden.
Ryan was one of the few star players in Anaheim who was adamant about not going overseas. I suppose that Ryan had enough of waiting and finally caved in order to play the sport he loves. On Nov 21, Ryan signed with the Mora IK of Sweden’s second-tier HockeyAllsvenskan league.
There, he is playing alongside a household name in Southern California and one Ducks fans haven’t grown very fond of. Ryan is playing on the same line as Anze Kopitar, a Los Angeles King, and he will be making an immediate impact while doing so. Ryan and Kopitar decided to play for the Mora IK instead of the first division Elitserien because it would’ve required them to make a full year commitment to the team. Clearly both would rather be playing in the NHL and don’t want to make any commitments that could change that.
As an avid Ducks fan, hearing that Ryan is playing on the same line as Kopitar isn’t giving me the warm fuzzy feelings, especially after Ryan’s recent antics of speaking publicly about his discontent with GM Bob Murray. With Ryan only being under contract with Anaheim for two more years, Los Angeles may be a new destination on his list if he starts to truly like playing on the same line as Kopitar — who wouldn’t?
Hopefully, this recent series of events doesn’t make Ryan contemplate becoming a King or else we have a new drama building right here in southern California.
