Yesterday by way of his Twitter account (@ovi8) Washington Capitals captain, Alexander Ovechkin, announced his engagement to girlfriend and Russian tennis player, Maria Kirilenko.

We are engaged !!!!!!! )))))))))

Just prior to the announcement, Ovechkin posted a picture of the happy couple (above) enjoying what looks to be a winter getaway with a friendly game of hockey (What else?  You can’t play tennis in the snow!).  Kirilenko also has a Twitter account (@mkirilenko), but no mention of the engagement.  In fact, surprisingly there isn’t any mention or pictures of Ovechkin at all.  The couple have been dating for a little over a year.

Ovechkin has been playing in the KHL over in Russia during the lockout for Dynamo Moscow.  Kirilenko has played tennis professionally in the WTA since 2002 and made her debut in the Fed Cup for Russia in 2006.  She was also the face of Adidas tennis gear by way of designer Stella McCartney before being replaced in 2009.

It’s great timing for Ovechkin and the NHL with the lockout.  Hockey fans are pretty tired and fed up with only hearing about negotiations between the NHL and NHLPA (or lack thereof) and what a great way to ring in the New Year.

Congratulations to the newly engaged couple!
