AHL Preview: Grand Rapids Griffins vs. Milwaukee Admirals
A busy weekend for the Grand Rapids Griffins (Detroit Red Wings) continues today when they travel to Wisconsin to take on their Midwest Division rival Milwaukee Admirals (Nashville Predators). The Griffins beat the Oklahoma City Barons (Edmonton Oilers) 5-2 on Friday, and took a shootout win over the Chicago Wolves (Vancouver Canucks) last night, 4-3. The Admirals got a 4-3 win over the Wolves on Thursday and lost in a shootout to the Barons last night.
In what could be the last AHL game for a handful of players, the Griffins will look for continued offensive production from Gustav Nyquist (11 goals, 31 points), Tomas Tatar (13 goals, 29 points) and Landon Ferraro (11 goals, 24 points). Grand Rapids native Luke Glendening had a big game against the Wolves, with two goals, giving him three in eight AHL contests since his call-up from the Toledo Walleye. Thomas McCollum got the win for the Griffins last night, and was impressive in the shootout. Coach Jeff Blashill will likely turn back to Petr Mrazek tonight, who is fifth in the league with a 12-3 record and 2.12 GAA.
The Admirals will hope to get some of their top players back in the scoring mix today. Chris Mueller and rookie Austin Watson each have 12 goals to lead the team, while youngsters Michael Latta (21 points) and Taylor Beck (23 points) continue to have impressive seasons. Jeremy Smith is 12-11-2 between the pipes this season, despite a GAA of 2.37. Magnus Hellberg could see the start today and will hope to improve on a 4-4 mark for the season.
If you’re in the Milwaukee area or stream AHL games online, don’t miss this one as it could be your last chance to see some of these players in the minors this season.
