Everyone knew that as soon as the lockout was over, the obligatory Roberto Luongo rumors would start again. For quite some time Bobby Lu has been rumored in trade talks regarding the Toronto Maple Leafs, but TSN’s James Duthie is now reporting that the Philadelphia Flyers are indeed interested in Luongo.
Why would the Flyers be interested in Luongo? They signed Ilya Bryzgalov to a big contract last summer, are they giving up on him this quick? The Russian netminder floundered during the 2012 playoffs and was barely serviceable during the regular season. He posted a .909 save percentage which is padded with a late-season run where he played very well, other than that he didn’t play up to expectations.
Luongo has been considered one of the top goalies in the league for quite some time, but with the uprising of Corey Schneider, the Vancouver Canucks have to make a decision, and it’s apparent that they want to stick with Schneider. Luongo has posted top-10 numbers in his time in Vancouver, but the playoff performance for him just hasn’t been there, and that adds to the reasoning behind his position on the trade block.
The rumors have been swirling for months on end now, who really knows what will happen, if anything? I consider Bobby Lu to be one of the more overrated goalies in the league, but that being said, I still think he is a better option than a lot of teams have at this point. Luongo turns 34 in April, something to keep in mind for teams inquiring.
