The Washington Capitals made a minor move on Saturday, adding to their forward corps before training camp starts up with the end of the NHL Lockout near. General Manager George McPhee will sign former Capitals forward Eric Fehr to a one year deal, worth $600,000. The deal was reported by Katie Carrera of the Washington Post.

The physical winger will receive an invitation to Capitals training camp that is set to begin on Sunday. As long as Fehr passes his physical, the former Winnipeg Jets forward will play for the Capitals this season.

Fehr played in Finland during the NHL lockout this winter, registering 13 goals and 12 assists in 21 games for HPK Hameenlinna.

He was originally selected by the Capitals in the first round of the 2003 NHL entry draft and played in 230 games before being traded to the Winnipeg Jets prior to last season. In his time with Washington, the 212 pound winger posted 93 points, but couldn’t stay healthy.

The Capitals traded him to Winnipeg in the summer of 2011 due to salary cap constraints. Washington received Danick Paquette along with a fourth round pick in the 2011 draft in exchange for Fehr.

He’ll likely compete for a role on the third or fourth line, and could possibly find time on Washington’s second power play unit if head coach Adam Oates likes what he sees. He’ll be up against Joey Crabb, Wojtek Wolski, Matt Hendricks and Jason Chimera in his bid for ice time.
