Paul Coffey became the highest scoring defenseman in team history with 344 points scoring a power play goal against the Flyers at 9:25 of the second period.

Jack Button was named general manager of the Penguins; he replaced Jack Riley.

One day after retiring as a player, Ken Schinkel became the  Penguins third head coach.
