Evgeni Malkin earned his eighth career hat trick (it was a natural hat trick*) against Tampa Bay Lightning and former Pittsburgh Penguins goalie, Mathieu Garon; Malkin finished the game with five points and the Penguins beat Tampa Bay by a score of 6-3.

*scoring three consecutive goals in one game by one player without any other player (teammate or opponent) scoring within those three goals

Sebastien Caron stopped all 26 shots he faced from the Carolina Hurricanes and notched his first shutout with the Penguins.

Patrick Lalime recorded a shutout against the Hartford Whalers after stopping all 31 shots he faced which allowed him to establish the NHL record for the best start by a rookie goaltender from the beginning of his career; the Penguins won by a score of 3-0.
