The Pittsburgh Penguins played the 48-game season-opener against the Philadelphia Flyers in front of a crowd of 19,994 at the Wells Fargo Center and won by a score of 3-1.

Evgeni Malkin recorded his fifth NHL career hat trick against the New York Islanders; and

Brent Johnson stopped a penalty shot attempted by Islanders’ Kyle Okposo.

Dany Sabourin earned his second shutout beating the Montreal Canadiens by a score of 2-0; it was the third time the Penguins shutout the Canadiens in Montreal.

Johan Hedberg earned his sixth shutout against the Edmonton Oilers by stopping 25 shots.

Mario Lemieux scored on a penalty shot against Islanders goalie, Kelly Hrudey.

Dunc Wilson recorded his third shutout stopping all 21 shots from the Vancouver Canucks.

Pittsburgh Athletic Club played against Queens in front of 5,523 at the Duquesne Gardens; Queens won by a score of 1-0 .
