It’s still early on, but the argument can be made that the Montreal Canadiens could not have asked for a better start to the shortened 2013 season as they have a 3-1 record heading into Tuesday’s game against the Winnipeg Jets. Despite the impressive start, NHL rumors are already beginning to swirl about one of their key players–P.K. Subban.
Last season, Subban recorded seven goals to go along with 29 assists in the 81 games he played in for the Canadians and while these numbers may not be that impressive for that long of a span, it’s the potential with Subban that puts the team on the spot when it comes to what to do with his future. At 23-years-old, the potential is certainly there for Subban to develop into one of the league’s top players, but the last thing Montreal wants to do is jump the gun by throwing a ton of money his way before proving himself as an elite defenseman in the league.
The Canadians are currently trying to work out a deal with Subban, but if they can’t manage to pay him the amount of money he’s looking for–it’s difficult not to wonder what could happen next. As much as Montreal would love to keep Subban around, the last thing they want to do is lose him in the future because of money.
There are plenty of teams that would love a player like Subban on board–so let’s hope the Canadians can work out a deal at a fair price before it’s too late.
