Captain Gets It Done For Minnesota Wild
It was expected from day one of the National Hockey League season that the Minnesota Wild would be one of the top teams in the entire league. While Minnesota squeaked out a 3-2 win on Tuesday night against the Columbus Blue Jackets, they needed production from one of their lesser-known stars to get it done. Mikko Koivu scored and had an assist to add to his already impressive point total this season. Koivu now has eight points in just six games. The team was going to be known for players like Zach Parise and Ryan Suter but Koivu has shown early on that he will be a very productive member of the team.
Koivu is now in his seventh year with the Wild after being a first-round draft pick by the team 12-years ago. Koivu has really stepped up his game early this season after scoring just 12 goals all year for Minnesota during the 2011-12 season. If Minnesota is going to be successful this season, they will need Koivu to continue on this recent hot streak.
The Wild get a visit from the unbeaten Chicago Blackhawks on Wednesday night and that game will really show where the Wild are in the early part of this season. Koivu is proving what kind of player he is, especially when Parise is on the ice with him. If Minnesota is going to be a true contender for the Stanley Cup this season, it is up to Koivu to keep skating down the same path he is on.
