The Detroit Red Wings are off to an impressive start to the 2013 season and they improved to 3-2-1 on  Tuesday after an impressive 4-1 win over the Dallas Stars–mainly because of a strong performance by Valtteri Filppula.

For a player that had yet to score his first goal of the season heading into Tuesday, Filppula came up big for the Red Wings as he scored two of the team’s four goals against the Stars. Even though Filppula had recorded three assists coming in, it was still a bit of a reason for concern that he had yet to score a goal on the year.

Now–the weight is off Filppula’s shoulders as he doesn’t have to worry about dealing with the pressure.

It may still be early on in the season, but it’s no secret the Red Wings should be considered one of the top teams in the Western Conference once again. As one of the most popular hockey towns in the country, Detroit is always one of the top teams in the league year after year and this season looks to be a similar case once again.

Tuesday’s game was only one contest, but it was nice to see the Red Wings have a strong performance by Filppula against the Stars to boost his confidence over the course of the regular season. Keep in mind Filppula set a career high with 23 goals last season–so let’s hope he can top that in 2013.
