The Montreal Canadiens have a lot to be happy about after Saturday afternoon’s 6-1 beatdown of the Buffalo Sabres. Their young players continued to perform well, David Desharnais and Lars Eller got their first goals of the season and Carey Price turned aside 30 shots for the win in goal. It was also the first game of the season for defenseman P.K. Subban, who got an assist on one of Desharnais’ two goals.
Rene Bourque also scored twice for Montreal, while Brendan Gallagher got his third goal of the season. Fellow rookie Alex Galchenyuk had two assists, and a plus-2 rating. With the team slated to get Max Pacioretty back sooner than expected, this could be just the beginning of a great season for the Canadiens. The team ranks ninth in goals scored, has allowed the ninth fewest goals and has the league’s sixth most potent power play. The Sabres were coming off a 7-4 win over the Boston Bruins on Thursday night, but now find themselves last in the Northeast Division.
Price has been stellar between the pipes this season, and has a 5-1 record with a 1.98 GAA. The only thing keeping the Canadiens out of first place is the fact that they play in the same division as the 6-1-1 Bruins and the 5-2-1 Ottawa Senators. A Sunday meeting with the Senators will give the team a chance to keep rolling, and possibly move into second place. If they continue getting scoring from all line and converting on the power play, Price seems more than capable of doing the rest to get them wins.
