The Los Angeles Kings only allowed 14 shots on goal Thursday night, but still suffered a 3-0 loss at the hands of the Nashville Predators. While Jonathan Quick’s performance in goal was less than spectacular, there’s no reason for an offense that features Dustin Brown, Anze Kopitar, Jeff Carter and Mike Richards not to find the back of the net.
The Kings have now lost three of their past four games, scoring nine goals but allowing 13. The defending Stanley Cup champions now sit last in the Pacific Division with a 3-4-2 record, as a new concern seems to pop up with every game. Simon Gagne leads the team with five points, and while it’s nice to see a balanced offense where over half the team has scored, there’s no reason for any NHL team to have a leading scorer with five points after nine games have been played.
The Kings power play went cold in the loss to the Predators, and it was the fifth time this season the team has gone without a goal. They now have five power play goals in 43 chances, 27th in the league. The reigning champs also rank 25th in goals for and 22nd in goals against, not exactly glowing stats for a team that achieved so much success in 2011-12. Then again, Los Angeles did sneak into the playoffs last season as the eighth seed, got hot at the right time and went on to win the Cup!
