Despite making it to the Conference Finals last season and losing to the eventual NHL Champions, the Phoenix Coyotes have only been able to win two games in a row once this season. They sit near the bottom of the Pacific Division and are not faring much better in the Western Conference. It has been far from the season the Coyotes thought they would be having, after such a good run the season before.
On Monday they will have an opportunity to win a second game in a row when they travel to Denver to face the Colorado Avalanche. It is a match-up that has favored Phoenix more often then not, and with Mike Smith starting in goal, its as close to a sure thing as you are going to get in the NHL.
Smith is coming off of a fantastic game against the San Jose Sharks, a game which he delivered a shut out within the Shark Tank, a moment the Phoenix goalie is sure to remember for a long, long time. He heads in to Colorado with a 4-01 record, and if he continues his impressive season, the Coyotes will be taking a major step in the right direction.
In a shortened season, it will be extremely hard to play catch up, so if Phoenix is going to stand a chance of getting back into this, they need to make a move now by taking advantage of every opportunity that presents itself. They stole a game on Saturday against the Sharks, and they cannot afford to give it back by losing a game they should easily win.
